The Philippines faces a significant challenge in addressing the needs of out-of-school children and youth (OSY). In Manila and Quezon City, an estimated 30% of youth are not enrolled in formal education. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for alternative learning pathways that cater to the unique circumstances of these individuals.
Many OSY in communities like Parola and Payatas face barriers to accessing formal education. These barriers include poverty, lack of access to quality schools, and social and economic factors that hinder their ability to attend school. The current educational system often fails to adequately address the needs of OSY, leaving them vulnerable to social exclusion, limited economic opportunities, and a diminished sense of hope for the future.
Through Puso Sa Puso Edukasyon, Inc. Salvatorian Sisters in the Philippines aim to bridge this gap through its Alternative Learning System Approach (ALSA) program, aptly named "ALSA BUHAY" – uplifting lives through education for a better future. |
To achieve the goals, Puso Sa Puso Edukasyon, Inc. will implement a comprehensive program encompassing the following key activities:
- Basic Literacy Program: This program will provide foundational literacy and numeracy skills to OSY who have not completed primary education.
- Alternative Learning System (ALS) Program: This program will offer flexible and individualized learning pathways for OSY who wish to pursue secondary education or vocational training.
- Early Childhood Care and Development (ECCD) Program: This program will provide early learning opportunities for children aged 4-5 years old, ensuring a strong foundation for their future educational journey.
- Livelihood Program: This program will equip OSY with marketable skills and knowledge through vocational training and entrepreneurship development, enabling them to gain economic independence.
- Child Protection Program: This program will provide OSY with access to resources and support services to address issues related to child protection, safety, and well-being.
- Parent and Learners Formation Program: This program will engage parents and learners in workshops and activities to promote understanding and collaboration in supporting OSY's educational journey.
- Scholarship Program: This program will provide financial assistance to OSY who wish to pursue higher education, partnering with organizations like ENFANTS DU MEKONG to offer scholarships for college and university studies.
The project will directly benefit OSY in Parola and Payatas, targeting children and youth across various age groups:
250 students are the beneficiaries per year. The total cost is 11.000 euros per year.
